Police have launched a road safety campaign in Luuka District, engaging Boda Boda riders in discussions aimed at reducing accidents and improving compliance with traffic laws.
The launch was officiated by the traffic police director, Lawrence Nuwabiine.
The meeting, held at the Resident District Commissioner’s (RDC) office, was attended by senior security officials from Luuka and Busoga North, as well as representatives of Boda Boda associations from across the district.
In his address, Nuwabiine highlighted that a significant number of road accidents result from Boda Boda riders failing to adhere to traffic regulations.
He emphasized the importance of education and enforcement to curb the rising number of road fatalities.
“I came here to personally engage with Boda Boda riders because their role in transportation is crucial. However, we must ensure they follow the rules to protect their own lives and those of their passengers,” he stated.
During the event, attendees took a moment to honor the memory of Gladys Aliyinza, wife to Deputy Presidential Press Secretary Hajji Kirunda Farouk who tragically lost her life in a road accident on June 27, 2024.
Nuwabiine commended Hajji Kirunda Faruk for his commitment to national development and his efforts in addressing traffic-related concerns in Luuka.
He stressed that such meetings provide an opportunity for authorities to collaborate with the community in making roads safer.
Jaberi Nagaya, the Chairperson of the Luuka District Boda Boda Fraternity, expressed appreciation for Director
Nuwabiine’s efforts to improve traffic management, which have strengthened relations between law enforcement and the public.
He also urged Boda Boda riders to work closely with local leaders to foster continued development in Luuka and Busoga as a whole.
Luuka RDC, Hajjati Hawa Ndege Namugenyi, acknowledged that unlike other areas with taxis and buses , the district heavily depends on Boda Boda riders for transportation, even for long-distance travel.
She thanked the Nuwabiine for reducing excessive roadblocks and called for specialized training programs to equip riders with essential road safety skills.
“With proper training, Luuka can become a model district for road safety enforcement in Busoga,” she remarked.
Luuka LC V Chairman, Wakaze Simon, also commended the Director’s visit, stating that the initiative would significantly contribute to reducing accidents in the district.
The road safety campaign marks a crucial step toward improving traffic discipline among Boda Boda riders in Luuka, ensuring safer roads for all.
