Key Points:
According to Allan Ssempebwa, media relations manager at the Uganda National Roads Authority (Unra), a new ferry has been introduced at Masindi Port to enhance traffic flow and reduce disruptions for travelers.
Ahead of the planned closure of Karuma Bridge on September 23, Unra has deployed this second ferry to facilitate easier transportation to northern Uganda. The new ferry is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and offer a reliable alternative for those heading toward regions such as Gulu and Lira.
“A ferry has been set up at Masindi Port to offer an alternative route for travelers going to Gulu, Lira, and other areas due to the upcoming closure of Karuma Bridge, starting Monday, September 23, 2024, for rehabilitation,” Ssempebwa explained in an interview with Woods Radio.
The new ferry, much larger than the existing one, has been tested and is now ready for operation. It can accommodate up to 64 passengers, which is double the capacity of the current ferry.
According to Unra, the journey from Masindi Port to the Lango Sub-region by ferry takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Motorists traveling from Kampala along the Gulu Highway (via Luweero-Nakasongola-Kafu-Rwenkunye) can take a turn at Rwenkunye to reach Masindi Port.
Earlier in the week, Gen Katumba Wamala, the Minister of Works, announced the complete closure of Karuma Bridge starting September 23 to enable rehabilitation and repair works. The restoration project is expected to take three months.
Karuma Bridge, which is 61 years old, was partially closed in May after developing cracks. Since then, only light vehicles have been allowed to cross, while heavy trucks have been rerouted.
The bridge repairs will be carried out by the China Railway Seventh Group at a cost of Shs7.9 billion.
