The United Arab Emirates (UAE), through UAEAid and its embassy in Kampala, has delivered 400 tonnes of food aid to Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement, reinforcing its commitment to addressing food insecurity among displaced communities in Uganda.
Kiryandongo, spanning 27 square miles, is home to approximately 130,000 refugees, with 84,000 from South Sudan, 46,000 from Sudan, and others from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan has worsened the crisis, displacing over 14 million people, including 30,000 Sudanese refugees now living in Kiryandongo.
The UAE’s contribution, amounting to 400,000 kilograms of essential food supplies, aims to ease the burden on vulnerable families grappling with food shortages. Robinah Nannungi of Andre Foods International, an organisation involved in food distribution at the settlement, confirmed the arrival of 20,000 food packages specifically allocated for Sudanese refugees.
“We appreciate the donation from the UAE. This is very great because the refugees are already going through a scarcity of food, and this will help them meet their household food needs,” Nannungi said.
Hussein Hashim Timan, chairperson of the Sudanese refugee community in Kiryandongo, expressed gratitude for the support, acknowledging the Ugandan government and citizens for their hospitality.
